Biography

Dr. Batra is the Clifton C. Garvin professor of engineering science and mechanics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, USA. He is a world- recognized leader in applied mechanics and has extensively contributed to the literature in Smart structures/Piezoelectric materials, Functionally Gradient Materials, Material failure at high strain rates, Penetration & Impact Problems, and Molecular Mechanics/Dynamics Simulations of Nanostructures. Batra’s team has published more than 410 papers in peer-reviewed journals that have been cited more than 14,000 times with an h-index of 63 (Google Scholar). His graduate level textbook “Elements of Continuum Mechanics” (AIAA, 2006) extensively covers the development of material models. In 1995 Batra co-founded the journal Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, which he continues to co-edit. He has given numerous plenary/memorial lectures. His honors include the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s Award for Senior Scientists (1992), the International Society of Computational Engineering Science’s Eric Reissner Medal (2000), Honorary D.Sc. degree from Thapar University (2006), Society of Engineering Science’s Engineering Science Medal (2009), the Lee Hsun Research Award (2009) from the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Metals Research, an ASME Honorary Member Award (2015), the ASME Robert Henry Thurston Lecture Award (2016), and numerous faculty and alumni awards. He is a Fellow of the ASME, U.S. Association of Computational Mechanics, the Society of Engineering Sciences (where he served as vice president (1995) and president (1996)), the American Society for Engineering Education, and the American Academy of Mechanics.
